Swimsuits & Cover-Ups: Cover-Ups: Dresses Are Doing the Most (In the Best Way)

There’s a very specific shift happening right now: beachwear is no longer staying at the beach. I’m seeing it everywhere — Saint-Tropez, yes, but also SoHo, Silver Lake, even early dinners that turn into late nights. The cover-up dress isn’t just a layer anymore. It’s the look. Blame the post-resort 2026 runways leaning into sheer knits and undone glamour, or the fact that everyone’s over hyper-styled outfits. This is about ease that still reads intentional. A little transparent. A little tactile. A little “I didn’t try, but obviously I did.”
Here’s how I’d actually wear it.
Start with Beach Riot — they get the playful side of this better than most. I’m into the Roma Mini Dress in that almost-sunset tie-dye. It’s ruched, a little clingy, slightly chaotic in color — exactly what you throw on after a swim when you’re not going home yet. Add flat leather sandals, oversized sunglasses, and don’t overthink it. It’s giving beach party, but sharper.
If you want something quieter but still directional, L*Space is doing that soft, coastal minimalism thing. The Lisola Cover Up in that creamy ivory crochet? Wear it over a barely-there bikini, then take it straight to lunch with a low bun and gold hoops. Same with the Costa Nova Cover Up — the deep V and knot detail make it feel less “cover-up,” more “I planned this outfit.”
Then there’s Cult Gaia, which is obviously leaning into the sculptural, cutout-heavy version of this trend. The Nodin Knit Coverup is the one I keep coming back to. Black, ribbed, strategic skin. It’s not shy. I’d wear it at sunset with barely-there heels and slicked-back hair — less beach, more “I might end up somewhere expensive.” The Ilona Coverup is softer but still intentional, with those lace-up cutouts that make it feel styled even when it’s not.
And if you want drama — actual movement — Beach Riot again, with the Salty Wrap. It’s a full-length moment. Halter, slit, tropical print. This is the one you wear when you’re walking from the beach bar to dinner and you know people are looking.
I’ll say it plainly: the boring cover-up is over. If it doesn’t hold its own without the swimsuit, I’m not interested. Right now, it’s about pieces that blur the line — crochet that feels like knitwear, mesh that works after dark, silhouettes that move between sand and city without changing.
And honestly? That’s exactly how we want to dress right now. Effortless. But never forgettable.
